Henry IV, Part I is the first instalment of Shakespeare's gripping account of the titanic battle between Prince Hal and Harry Hotspur to become king of England.

As the sons of two enemy fathers, Hotspur is preparing to lead an army against the Henry IV in retaliation for his dismissal of the Percy family's demands. But the King's son Prince Hal is otherwise occupied in the pubs of Eastcheap with his companion Sir John Falstaff -- one of Shakespeare's great comic creations -- and is completely uninterested in the fate of his country.

Note: the Globe's theatre season runs from April to October. Craig has been to watch a play at the Globe himself and thoroughly recommends it because it's not like any other theatre you've ever seen -- it's all open-air, for a start, and it has a standing area in the middle (called 'The Yard'). The actors sometimes parade through this yard during the scenes, and end up involving the crowd as if they were part of the cast. Read Craig's review of watching a play at the Globe before you go, so you can get a feeling for what it's like inside.
