The Globe Theatre is #10 in our London Bucket List

Director: Jonathan Munby; Written by: William Shakespeare

The Merchant of Venice is famed for some of the most intense scenes in the whole of Shakespeare's canon.

It tells the story of a wealthy heiress, Portia, who is forced to set her suitors a challenge: win, and they will win her hand in marriage; but lose, and they will lose much more than a hand!

Whilst Bassanio manages to borrow some money from his friend to finance his attempt, Antonio is forced to take out a loan from the most famous moneylender in theatre: Shylock. If he cannot repay the money then Shylock will demand a pound of his flesh instead.

The Globes Theatre's season runs from April to October. Craig has been to see a play himself and thoroughly recommends it. It's not like any other theatre that you have been to. It's open-air for a start, and it has a standing area in the middle. The actors actually use this area for some of the scenes, and involve the crowd as if they are part of the cast. Check out Craig's review before you go, so you can get a feeling for what it's like inside.
