We wouldn't normally include an event like this in our guide... but how often do you get to carve your own name on a gravestone?

Actually... we are not certain that you will be allowed to do that (probably not), but you can always hope. But it should be a lot of fun anyway, because this is a hands-on lesson in how to cut letters on a piece of Portland stone.

Highgate Cemetery's resident stone mason Neil Luxton will be there to provide you with all the tools and knowledge required to shape a block of stone and inscribe it with some letters -- and you'll even be able to take it home. (Lucky you -- having to carry a big stone home!)

Don't worry if you've never carved any names on a block of stone before, because this day is for people with absolutely no experience. You don't need any artistic skills either. And as an added bonus, you'll get to enjoy a short tour of the cemetery beforehand.
