Free

to British Museum The British Museum will be hosting a small exhibition showcasing all the medals that can be won at the London Olympics. Also on show will be medals from the 1908 and 1948 London Olympics. The display will tell the complete story of the medals from start to finish, from the mining of the metal to the creation of the designs, to the final casting at the Royal Mint.

That’s all the sports events, but there are lots more outdoor events in London on 4 April including:

Lucian Freud’s Portraits4 AprilThis major new exhibition will focus on Lucian Freud’s portraits — a central theme throughout his career. It will be divided into broad themes from particular periods. For example, paintings of Freud’s lovers, close friends and family will be used to demonstrate the psychological drama and intensity of his work.

“Her Maj” — 60 years of portraits of the Queen in cartoons4 AprilThe Cartoon Museum will be marking the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee with a special exhibition of portraits drawn during the last 60 years. Some are affectionate, some are teasing, and some are totally unflattering, but their combined might showcase how her image has changed down the decades, and explores how the monarch’s image was taboo in cartoons even as late as the 1950s.

All New People4 April“All New People” tells the story of Charlie, who has retreated to Long Beach Island for the winter. With his life in a rut, his little hideaway escape plan is ruined a motley parade of misfits who turn up and darken the mood. What will a fireman, a beauty queen, and a Brit estate agent do cooped up in a beach house?

Titian’s “Diana and Callisto”4 AprilThis special exhibition celebrates the National Gallery’s acquisition of Titian’s “Diana and Callisto”. Its companion painting “Diana and Actaeon” was purchased in 2009, and the pair have now been reunited in Room 1. “Diana and Callisto” shows the moment when Diana banishes Callisto after revealing her pregnancy.

Queen Elizabeth II, by Cecil Beaton4 AprilCecil Beaton photographed The Queen as she went from being a princess to a monarch and a mother. This exhibition will feature nearly 100 of his best portraits. Also included are extracts from Beaton’s own letters and diaries, which will reveal the intense planning and working practice of a royal sitting.

Sandi Toksvig: Discovering People4 AprilAuthor, presenter and comedienne Sandi Toksvig will be talking about her travels around the world, from growing up in the States to exploring Britain, for her stimulating weekly travel programme ‘Excess Baggage’.

“Dickens and London” exhibition, at the Museum of London4 AprilThe Museum of London will be marking the 200th anniversary of Charles Dickens’ birth by putting on a major new exhibition, taking you on a journey through Victorian London to discover the city that inspired his writings. Paintings, photographs and the original manuscripts of ‘Bleak House’ and ‘David Copperfield’ will bring to life the author’s world.

Stephen Hawking: A 70th birthday celebration4 AprilThe Science Museum will be celebrating Professor Stephen Hawking’s 70th birthday with a small exhibition of objects and papers from his own archives. There will also be some specially recorded audio by Professor Hawking himself, and some photographs that span his life and career, many of them previously unseen.

“Sweeney Todd” — with Michael Ball and Imelda Staunton4 AprilMichael Ball and Imelda Staunton will be starring in Stephen Sondheim’s musical “Sweeney Todd”, which tells the tale of Sweeney Todd’s return to London after years of imprisonment. His quest for retribution takes in the local pie-shop owner, who’s meaty recipes aid him in avenging the wrongs done to him and his family.
