to Lyttelton Theatre Maxim Gorky's "Children of the Sun" is set in Russia just before the revolution. It follows the new middle-class as they flounder about, philosophising and flirting, blind to their impending annihilation. Protasov immerses himself in chemical experiments, oblivious to his best friend's pursuit of his wife, and the starving mob outside his house. Whilst his admiring circle spar over culture and the cosmos, only Liza feels the peoples' suffering and senses their own privileged world is in jeopardy.
