Need some inspiration for 3rd May? The Festival of Britain was opened by George VI on this day in 1951, in an attempt to recreate the Victorian exhibition of 1851 in post-war Britain. The event was held on the bombed-out South Bank. The only building that still survives today is the Royal Festival Hall.
