St. Mary Woolnoth church dates from before the Norman Conquest. It was rebuilt by William the Conqueror and was badly damaged in the Great Fire of London, being patched up by Christopher Wren.

Wren’s pupil, Nicholas Hawksmoor, took over in 1716 and spent the next decade broadening the west tower and adding Corinthian columns to the interior.
