I bet you didn't know that you can actually go inside Wellington Arch and look out from the top. They've got a little lift inside that takes you up to a balcony which looks out over the roundabout. It's not a bad little view up there.
All the guidebooks make out that the balcony gives great views over Buckingham Palace Gardens, so I was hoping to see the Queen picking weeds in the flower beds. But it turns out that that is a load of old baloney, because you can't see anything at all. All you can see is the big trees behind the wall, and the leaves block everything else out. You can't see the the Palace, the lake, or any of the people. All I could see was about 5 feet of path (see photo). So if you're going to go, take a tip from me and come in the winter, because then the leaves might drop off the trees giving you a better view.
[P.S. Here's another tip: Remember to look up. I completely forgot to do that when I was up there and was kicking myself when I came out. You probably get a good view of the statue from the balcony, but it completely slipped my mind.]
[Edit: I've since been back to Wellington Arch purely to see if you can see the statue from the balcony... and you can! You get the horses hooves towering over the edge above your head, and you can just about see the front half of the statue. But not the whole thing though -- it's not a great view. But I have more news to report... because it looks like they change the exhibition every now and then, because they'd completely removed all the history of Wellington Arch stuff, and replaced it with a temporary show about the Blackpool Tower. As interesting as it was -- and it was quite interesting, admittedly -- I think I would prefer to see the history of Wellington Arch. So that is something to bear in mind if you ever decide to go.]
