As You Like It

Written by: William Shakespeare; Cast: (the cast may change on different dates) Catrin Aaron, Yarit Dor, James Garnon, Federay Holmes, Colin Hurley, Bettrys Jones, Richard Katz, Jack Laskey, James Maloney, Nadia Nadarajah, Ellan Parry, Pearce Quigley, Shubham Saraf, Helen Schlesinger, Michelle Terry, Elle While, Sian Williams, Tanika Yearwood

The Globe's production of As You Like It will include one very special performance at midnight. Given that it's an open-air theatre, the sight of the stars shining above the stage promises to make it a very memorable experience.

Great comedies need four things to work well: cross-dressing, slapstick farce, a bit of passion... and a wrestling match. It also has one of Shakespeare's nuttiest plots.

When Rosalind falls in love with Orlando at a wrestling match her panicking uncle banishes her from court. He's worried in case Orlando tries to reclaim the birthright that the usurping uncle stole. She then seeks out her father in a forest and, disguised as a boy, teaches Orlando how to woo. (Don't worry, it will all make sense when you watch it!)

Note: the Globe's theatre season runs from April to October. Craig has been to watch a play at the Globe himself and thoroughly recommends it because it's not like any other theatre you've ever seen -- it's all open-air, for a start, and it has a standing area in the middle (called 'The Yard'). The actors sometimes parade through this yard during the scenes, and end up involving the crowd as if they were part of the cast. Read Craig's review of watching a play at the Globe before you go, so you can get a feeling for what it's like inside.
