Thomas Cole was a British-born American painter best-known for his landscapes.
His works are rarely seen outside America, so this is a great opportunity to see how they stack up alongside famous British contemporaries like Turner and Constable. Highlights include The Oxbow and his monumental cycle of paintings called The Course of Empire.
The exhibition will also shed some light on the dialogue that played back and forth between American and European painters oin the mid-19th century.
