The Russian State Opera is coming over to Cadogan Hall to put on a performance of Puccini'sTosca, a fast-moving story of love, lust, murder and political intrigue, set in Rome at the same time as Napoleon's invasion of Italy.
When Mario Cavaradossi agrees to help an escaping fugitive, he sets off a disasterous chain of events that links him, his lover Floria Tosca, and the evil Chief of Police, Scarpia.
Scarpia is one of the most malevolent villains in opera -- ruthlessly pursuing and torturing the enemies of the state. His dark, demonic music contrasts wonderfully with the expansive arias of the idealistic lovers, Tosca and Cavaradossi.
