London has loads of outdoor ice rinks to choose from at Christmas time, but we think the nicest one is definitely at Somerset House.
The backdrop to the ice is spectacular. The 18th-century courtyard is floodlit and decorated with a gigantic Christmas tree at one end, and the West Wing will be transformed into a Christmas shopping arcade (a pop-up version of the Fortnum & Mason store) where you can go shopping for yuletide treats.
They also have a little cafe overlooking the rink for those people to scared to skate (ie. the mums), serving cocktails, mulled wine, or a mug of piping hot chocolate.
A Skate School will be on hand to help you find your feet, and the Polar Cub Club will do the same for kids, helping them to take their first tentative steps on the ice.

Craig’s review – “The best ice rink at Christmas is the one at Somerset House. This is how a winter rink should look, all lit in brilliant blues with a giant Tiffany Christmas tree up the front. It gets dark early in the winter when we put the clocks back so it's pitch black at five-thirty, and people have packed it out already. They are half gliding and half sliding, and they all look… continued”
