For as long as artists have been painting landscapes, they have been studying and painting trees. But for some artists the tree was the picture, and they made them the subject of close study in their own right.

The Courtauld Gallery's new exhibition uses pieces from its own collection to explores artists' enduring fascination with the tree. Whether they were drawn straight from nature, or loaded with poetic or political symbolism, artists throughout the ages have treated trees with the same reverence as a portraitist would accord a sitter.

The artworks on show range from the early 16th-century to the mid-19th, and include works by the likes of Fra Bartolommeo, Jan van Goyen, Claude Lorrain and John Constable.
