"Rigoletto" is one of Verdi's most popular operas, and usually tells the story of a hunchbacked joker in the colourful court of 16th-century Mantua. Jonathan Miller's production shifts it across the Atlantic and gives it a Mafia angle — transferring it to New York's Little Italy in the 1950s.
Rigoletto dotes on his daughter Gilda, but when a wealthy Duke sets his sights on her he vows revenge... but this time he definitely won't be having the last laugh.
Verdi's score is packed with melody and atmosphere from the opening chords, and includes such famous works as 'La donna e mobile' and 'Caro nome'.
Madeleine Shaw is a mezzo-soprano who has sung at the Welsh National Opera, Opera North and Covent Garden with Sir Andrew Davis, Sir Mark Elder and Edward Gardner.
