I've never understood this movie. Has anyone actually worked out what that black slab is all about?

Arthur C Clarke's "2001" is wildly regarded as one of the greatest science fiction movies of all-time, and really picks up when the scary computer HAL starts taking over.

Stanley Kubrick's movie also has one of the most memorable scores in cinema history -- who can forget it's use of Richard Strauss' "Also sprach Zarathustra"? I can never hear that piece of music without thinking of this movie and Elvis entering his concerts. It's also famous for its use of Johann Strauss' "Blue Danube Waltz".

The Royal Festival Hall will be showing the film on a big screen, alongside a live performance of the score by the Andre de Ridder and the London Philharmonic Orchestra.
