The Royal Academy of Arts' big exhibition this year is David Hockney's "82 Portraits and 1 Still Life".

Hockney upped sticks and left Yorkshire a few years ago for a move back to America, and this exhibition will provide a snapshot of the LA art world, together with some portraits of people who have crossed Hockney's path in his new life and studio.

His subjects range from friends and family to his office staff, fellow artists, and even a few curators and gallerists. Each work is the same size, and shows the sitter posing in exactly the same chair and against the same blue background... and yet Hockney's virtuoso painting style allows their differing personalities to leap off the canvas.
