This year's Christmas panto at the Lyric will be "Aladdin".
Ever since my mum and dad took me to Aladdin when I was a little kid I have been obsessed with genies (seriously). And whenever I see a lamp I rub it. When I see a jug, I rub it. When I see a mug, I rub it. When I see a bottle, I rub it. But nothing ever comes out of it -- not once! No cloud of dust or purple smoke or a big fat genie offering me three wishes -- nothing!
But I bet you 10p that when Aladdin rubs his prop at the Lyric's new panto than he'll get a genie first time.
He'll head off on an amazing journey to the mystical East, where he'll enter a cave of wonders and discover the magic lamp (a working one). Then he'll rub it and... bingo! Out will come a big purple genie first time, offering him three wishes, which he will then waste because he hasn't thought through the consequences. They should have let me rub it! But ah well.
The Lyric promises us some stunning sets, glittering costumes, some dazzling dancing and a magic carpet ride into a fun, fairytale world.
