When the German entomologist Maria Sibylla Merian set sail for South America in 1699, she would spend the next two years studying the plants and animals she found, and published the plates in the Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium (the 'Metamorphosis').

The Queen's Gallery's new exhibition showcases Merian's works which are held in the Royal Collection, many of which are partially printed and hand-painted onto vellum by the artist herself.
