In attempt to wrest control of a city ravaged by war, Creon refuses to bury the body of Antigone's rebellious brother. But when she defies him, Creon orders her to be buried alive as punishment. The citizens daren't object, but the prophet Teiresias speaks of the gods' anger: the rotting corpse is polluting the city.
