See the London Olympic medals, at the British Museum

to British Museum The British Museum will be hosting a small exhibition showcasing all the medals that can be won at the London Olympics. Also on show will be medals from the 1908 and 1948 London Olympics. The display will tell the complete story of the medals from start to finish, from the mining of the metal to the creation of the designs, to the final casting at the Royal Mint.

That’s all the sports events, but there are lots more outdoor events in London on 4 April including:

Verdi’s “Rigoletto” — Royal Opera House4 AprilOne of Verdi’s most popular operas, “Rigoletto” tells the tale of a hunchbacked court jester who dotes on his daughter Gilda in the colourful and corrupt world of 16th-century Mantua. But when the wealthy Duke of Mantua sets his sights on her, the course is set for tragedy.

Noel Coward’s “Hay Fever”4 April“Hay Fever” is set in the country house of Judith Bliss – a recently retired star of the London stage. When members of the Bliss family start inviting a guest to stay the weekend, none of them tell the others that they’re inviting someone over… The comedy of bad manners star stars Lindsay Duncan.

“Dickens and London” exhibition, at the Museum of London4 AprilThe Museum of London will be marking the 200th anniversary of Charles Dickens’ birth by putting on a major new exhibition, taking you on a journey through Victorian London to discover the city that inspired his writings. Paintings, photographs and the original manuscripts of ‘Bleak House’ and ‘David Copperfield’ will bring to life the author’s world.

Lucian Freud’s Portraits4 AprilThis major new exhibition will focus on Lucian Freud’s portraits — a central theme throughout his career. It will be divided into broad themes from particular periods. For example, paintings of Freud’s lovers, close friends and family will be used to demonstrate the psychological drama and intensity of his work.

Turner Inspired: In the Light of Claude4 AprilJ W Turner was a huge admirer of the Italian artist Claude’s landscapes. Two of Turner’s most famous paintings were even left to the gallery on the proviso that they were hung between two of his pictures. This exhibition will showcase some other closely related works and includes oils, watercolours and sketchbooks.

“Picasso and Britain” exhibition4 April“Picasso and Britain” will explore the artist’s lifelong connections with this country. The exhibition will consist of 150 works charting Picasso’s rise in Britain, tracing the ways in which his work was exhibited and collected here during his lifetime. It will also examine the artist’s impact on 20th-century modernism.

Alistair McGowan and Friends4 AprilTV impressionist Alistair McGowan will be performing for an eclectic night of comedy in aid of the Green Party. He will be joined by plenty of friends, including Scott Capurro, Ian Saville, Shelley Bridgman, Calen Harley, David Whitney, Abie Philbin Bownan’s Eco Jihad and Karen Bailey.

Weber, Rachmaninov and Brahms — Cadogan Hall4 AprilJoin conductor Yuki Miyagi, pianist Kemal Gekic, and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at Cadogan Hall, as they perform a selection of classical works by Weber, Rachmaninov and Brahms.

Hajj — Journey to the heart of Islam4 AprilHajj is one of the five pillars of Islam, and every muslim must make a pilgrimage to Mecca at least one time in their lives. This major new exhibition will chart the history of this journey, exploring how pilgrims have tackled it through the centuries.
