26th Sep 2010 Tour the streets of Spitalfields and find out about the area’s Jewish history. Visit the sites of old synagogues, Yiddish theatres, vapour baths and outdoor markets, and hear stories of immigrant communities who made this area their home.
Old Spitalfields is a huge covered market in London dating back to Victorian times. It served as the City’s main fruit and veg market until 1991, and now contains a wide variety of specialist stores.
In 2002 – in a terrible act of architectural vandalism – the western end was demolished to make way for an office complex, and – despite its listed status – there are persistent rumours that the eastern end will follow.
