Old Spitalfields is a huge covered market in London dating back to Victorian times. It served as the City’s main fruit and veg market until 1991, and now contains a wide variety of specialist stores.

In 2002 – in a terrible act of architectural vandalism – the western end was demolished to make way for an office complex, and – despite its listed status – there are persistent rumours that the eastern end will follow.
A word from the owners:
Old Spitalfields Market is an eclectic mix of old and new, following a much-acclaimed sympathetic restoration programme.
The ‘new’ Old Spitalfields Market is a wonderful tapestry of the arts and crafts-inspired old Victorian Market Hall – situated around the listed Horner building – blended with the urbane and post-modern architecture of Sir Norman Foster at the western end.
Recently, Old Spitalfields Market won the ‘Best Fashion Market’ category in Time Out’s Shopping Awards 2008 – a testimony to the ingenuity of the traders and businesses operating here… one of the country’s last bastions of consumer diversity and individuality. Home to an old-fashioned community of over 30 independent and large traders and a plethora of chic bohemian businesses, it has secured its place at the forefront of interiors, design, food and the arts.
